This paper is the last paper written by Stuart Feder before his untimely death in 2005. It was precirculated and discussed at the winter meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York. Dr. Feder intended to revise and publish this work and asked me to try to distribute it for him. Circulating his paper on this blog is, in many ways, a response to honor his request and his memory. Dr. Feder was a dedicated psychoanalyst thoroughly trained in music and spent many years writing about music as a point of entry into affect via unconscious processes. His last book “Gustav Mahler: A Life in Crisis” was just completed before his death (a review appears elsewhere on this blog written by Martin Nass, Ph.D.). He leaves a heritage of innovative thought in psychoanalysis and music, and his influence is deeply felt, appreciated, and missed by those of us fortunate to have known and worked with him.
