This paper is a treasure on my favorite subject. It is worth the time it takes to read it, and to savor its many good ideas. It is also worth re-reading! Thanks for posting it.

This is an extremely valuable review of the psychoanalytic process presented by Martin Bergmann with refreshing simplicity and clarity. I especially appreciated his retelling of the myth of Narcissus and Echo and tying its significance to our understanding of object relations and to treatment of narcissistic patients.
I agree that to treat such patients by avoiding conflict leads to therapeutic failure and that anger must enter the analytic process in order to help patients grow. If we do not do that, we repeat the fate of Echo and Narcissus
Juy Logue is right in saying that this paper is well worth rereading.
