		<description>Comment posted for Zvi Lothane:

Patrick Mahony overstates his case about Freud’s misogyny. He quotes the passage that begins with the words:

“[Her superego] is never so inexorable, so
impersonal, so independent of its emotional
origins as we require it to be in men,” etc.

This is no misogyny here: this is the prevalent prejudice among patriarchal men in the 19th century, and perhaps still in a goodly number of men today. It is rather a reflection on man’s vanity and a false sense of superiority rather than misogyny per se.

Freud was a terminal Mama’s boy, as reflected in the deep awe with which he treated his mother through her dying day. He displayed chivalry and admiration in his dealings with Lou Andreas-Salome. He was at first patronizing towards Sabina Spielrein but ended by treating her with great respect.

Patrick, where is the beef?
