Unfortunately, I was not at Dr. Logue’s session, but she raises critical questions at a time when our professional identities are being re-assessed.
With growing competition between those groups to which we claim allegiance, personally and professionally, and concerns about APA’s stance in its work with the U.S. military (echoed by the American Anthropological Association), her questions re. independence and inclusivity are fundamental.
As organizations, we must ask why anyone opts to become a member as we face complex new challenges to the way we define our mission. Some of those challenges will be economic, while others are ethical and political, but we will need to assess how best to serve our members as they represent increasingly diverse values and cultures. Should we reflect the status quo or the leading edge?
As members, we may find that the positions taken by our professional organizations may not always mirror our own beliefs and values. Those who once joined for networking and credentialing reasons, may find themselves increasingly uncomfortable with the implications of membership in their professional associations.
We are at the threshold of a new era, when group membership will have implications that extend far beyond providing logistical support and professional contact. Logue’s question re. inspiration and influence goes to the heart of these new challenges.
