    Comment from Jerrold Atlas:

We recognize that, under the guise of national security and threats of attack, there have been
some instances of a willigness by US leadership and the intel services to violate all sorts of
laws — domestic and foreign — that bring the nation to shame. That psychological professionals
sided with the doing of these deeds for a long time has diminished the prestige and morality of
the profession as much as it has revealed this American willingness to do perverse things in
    defense of the nation.

That soldiers and intel services performn these deeds is also at the heart of why they were
created. How do we find balance between national defense needs and morality?

I ask this because we have seen a pattern of diminished study of Civics (or Social Studies)
    – one of the principal purposes of a public system of education. There is no study/teaching of morality. Few have ever openly discussed how we can resolve national needs with the need to do rather evil things in this defense. Few Americans have any sense of what morality is other than something emphasized in religion. Few Americans have any opinion about some of the other questions herein asked. Obviously, the failure to discuss/educate/bring forward these questions in the context of national needs and international laws is another major failure of the nation/group.
