I must say that [this foreword by Leslie Shaw) stunned me. I knew a little bit about Bernays, and can only vaguely imagine how much more detail should be available in the mix between the old man and his nephew. Never before have I seen that Bernays impact was so powerful and also so well known to the world. And the essentiality of learning all about this history, for the sake of developing better perspectives regarding psychoanalysis and our American Democracy, that was the background in my mind reading almost every word. Our current political world, clearly the intersection of emotions and meager attempts at rational thinking that seems to be guiding the diverse political views around the country, all this comes into much better focus by understanding the history as it is laid out here. It is so stimulating, so clarifying as well as confusing, that it feels to me now that it has become a ‘must read’,
    even summer reading.

Thanks for placing it out there where I could get to print it out, which I did. And now it is my self-imposed task to alert my local colleagues of its existence. We need a lot of discussion about this, and it will be of interest to see what follows.

    Mel Mandel
