How does a psychoanalyst understand loneliness? LIterary works
through their dramatic characters allow us to examine and consider
human passion, foibles and pain in a way that otherwise might not be
as easily recognizable. We invite you to to a discussion by Dr.
Jeffrey Stern about the loneliness of particular characters in
literature and how they resemble the patients seen by psychoanalysts
and psychotherapists. After attending this discussion the
participants should be able to: 1. Define methods of staving off
loneliness in specific situations; 2. Recognize the ways patients
defend against loneliness. Dr. Stern has published on Shakespeare. He
is a graduate and member of The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.
Self Psychology informs his ideas.

MITPP 2012 SUMMER INSTITUTE

WORKING WITH PARENTS AND CHILDREN OF DIVORCE
This six week clinical mini course will educate the therapist about legal issues, mandated reporting, letters to the court, subpoenas and establishing custody. The impact on children of separation and divorce, high conflict, the loss of the father, and the “caught in middle” syndrome will be explored. Parental capacity and goodness of fit with the child will be assessed. Other topics covered will be: who in the family to see, couples therapy, attachment and its bearing on divorce issues, overnight visitation, multiple attachments, siblings, step-parents and blended families, fatherhood, the child therapy process and work with divorced families as well as domestic violence and child sexual and physical abuse.

POST PARTUM DEPRESSION: ITS IMPACT ON MOTHER AND CHILD
The literature and direct work on postpartum depression, a specific type of depression that occurs after childbirth, has emphasized the biological aspect that plays a role in it. Often the crucial impact of psychological factors is minimized. In this four-week mini-course, we will aim to identify predisposing factors, symptoms and manifestations of post-partum depression and focus on the work we can do as clinicians to help from a psychoanalytic perspective.

THE EATING DISORDERED PATIENT: ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
In eating disorders, the body is used as an expression of affects and anxieties that must be kept out of awareness. When these issues are understood through treatment, the attack on the self is revealed and the communication of affect and experience can begin. This marks the beginning of connecting the patient to his or her inner life. For people with eating disorders the foundation is set for deeper work. Through clinical material, behaviors such as self-starvation, binding, exercising and other obsessional rituals will be examined. The unique aspects of these patients’ transferences will be explored. Techniques for creating and maintaining a therapeutic alliance with eating disordered patients will be discussed.

NANCY CROMER-GRAYSON, LCSW Faculty and Supervisor: Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Adult Program; New York Freudian Society Psychotherapy Program. Faculty: New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. Fellow: Academy of Eating Disorders. Vice President: American Anorexia and Bulimia Association. 177 East 87th Street (between Lexington and 3rd Avenues)

BIPOLAR DISORDER: THE INTERFACE BETWEEN MEDICATION AND PSYCHOTHERAPY
Bipolar Disorder is one of the puzzling diagnoses in psychiatric illnesses. As a result of ongoing clinical practice and neuroscience research, the diagnosis has gone through several revisions and includes a wide spectrum of psychological presentations. While the research evidence for genetic roots and biochemical causes of Bipolar Disorder is rapidly growing, the very basic Kleinian principle of Paranoid-Schizoid Position vs. Depressive Position appears to dominate the psychodynamics of most of these patients. These Kleinian positions will be presented and explained. This interactive workshop will review the diagnosis and the psychodynamic and the psychopharmacological aspects of this illness. The interface between medication and psychotherapy together with some clinical case material will be presented.

KAMRAN RAHMANI, MD Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Faculty and Supervisor: Montefiore Medical Center. Member: American Academy of Psychoanalysis, American Psychiatric Association, American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. Dr. Rahmani has conducted workshops on cultural issues in psychotherapy and clinical psychopharmacology.

Saturday, June 16
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM $50
60 West 13th Street, Suite #LB (between 5th and 6th Avenues, just off 6th)

TREATING THE CONCRETE PATIENT
A fundamental aspect of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis is the interpretation of symbolic meaning as it emerges through dreams, transference, unconscious fantasy and enactment. However, increasingly psychoanalytically-oriented clinicians find themselves working with patients who respond to symbolic interpretations with defensive concreteness, claiming in one way or another that “what I say is literally what I mean”: end of discussion. This mini-course will aim to more fully explore the problem of concreteness as well as several different ways to intervene in order to begin the process of opening up a therapeutic space in which effective interpretation can occur. In other words, how is it possible for both clinician and patient to arrive at a shared sense that anything that goes on in the therapeutic context could ultimately mean something other than its manifest content? Participants will be encouraged to bring vignettes from their own practices as we work through this most challenging clinical issue.

BRIAN KLOPPENBERG, MFA, LP Faculty: Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Adult Program. Board Member, Training and Supervising Analyst: National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. Director: Theodore Reik Clinical Center for Psychotherapy.

Tuesday, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
8:00 PM – 9:30 PM $100
155 West 20th Street, #3K (between 6th and 7th Avenues)

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR CLINICAL MATERIAL OR PREPARE A CASE FOR PRESENTATION
Organizing your clinical work with a patient is a unique endeavor. Most candidates and/or seasoned clinicians find their first experience very challenging because this kind of organizing draws on so many different skills, such as: the capacity to integrate clinical theory with practice, the ability to select and organize the clinical material which best represents your patient and, if you’re writing about the case, the ability to write clearly. The hardest part may be conceptualizing the therapeutic process so the patient and the therapist come alive. This mini course will cover the steps that can help you think about your clinical material in a more useful way or produce a presentation or paper which captures the therapeutic process, represents your understanding of your patient, demonstrates your role in the treatment, and substantiates your dynamic and diagnostic thinking.

LOUISE CRANDALL, Ph.D., LCSW Faculty and Supervisor: Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Adult Program. Training and Supervising Analyst: New York Freudian Society. Adjunct Associate Professor: New York University School of Social Work. Member: New York Freudian Society, International Psychoanalytical Association, National Association of Social Workers, New York State Society of Clinical Social Work Psychotherapists, National Membership Committee on Psychoanalysis.

Mondays, June 18, 25, July 9, 16
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM $80
170 West End Avenue, #1E (at 68th Street)

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE VERY, VERY BAD: BRINGING THE WHOLE CHILD INTO THERAPY
Children are referred for therapy because of difficulties at home and school – they may be aggressive, demanding, anxious, or prone to tantrums. Classmates avoid them, and parents and teachers describe them as “impossible.” Many of these children begin therapy, quickly become attached, and love to play and spend time with their therapist. It’s a pleasure to be with them in sessions. In short, these children are like two different people: gentle, sweet children with their therapists, and angry, needy, oppositional children with parents and teachers. This workshop will focus on ways to bring the whole child into treatment, to work with the loving and aggressive, the anxious and attached, the needy and obstructionist. Case examples will be used to demonstrate how to engage all sides of children in treatment, helping them to bring us their pleasures and pains, anxieties and anger, so that we can work together to help them alleviate their difficulties at home and in school.

Author: Children’s Use of Board Games in Psychotherapy and papers on child therapy.

The Treatment of Celebrity Patients
Ellen L. Mezan, Ph.D.

How does a patient’s fame affect the psychotherapist and consequently the course of treatment? What special considerations come up when treating celebrity patients? Based on her study of these treatment situations, Dr. Ellen Mezan will explore the peculiarities of the transference and countertransference situation that typically arise when treating celebrity patients, the way fame may excite conscious and unconscious envy in the analyst, the role of the psychotherapist’s financial and narcissistic investment in famous patients, and the analyst’s temptations to deviate from the standard parameters of treatment. Fame may have unconscious representations in the psychotherapist’s inner world that may complicate treatment. These phenomena are examined from Freudian, Kleinian, and Kohutian points of view.

Dr. Ellen Mezan is a clinical psychologist, former journalist and writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post.

Dear colleagues,

This week it has been very difficult to focus a single theme as so much is happening in our analytic world. We wonder about the influence of mothers on world leaders, neuroscience interfaces with our approach in ethical questions regarding the loss of a “self”, in our understanding of autism and Asperger diagnosed children, we are finding more data on the atrocities of the Holocause and we mourn 3 men whose lives have touched so many – Jean Laplanche whose contribution to psychoanalysis is unforgettable and Maurice Sendak whose ability to use the unconscious to speak to children and adults is unsurpassable, and Bertram Cohler who meant so much to many of his students. I list them first in my choices.

1) Please read the tribute to Jean Laplanche by Dominique Scarfone and extracts from an interview with Laplanche by Alberto Luchetti I would also like to thank Jonathan House from all of us for his detailed account of Laplanche’s work and his translations which he so kindly contributed as described in his post on Laplanche by our managing editor, N. Szajnberg, MD,

2) In addition to the posts here about Maurice Sendak as seen in the NY Times, I hope some of you were lucky enough to hear interviews with Maurice Sendak recorded just a couple of years ago and aired on NPR last week. He was a remarkable man.

XXII. Laplanche: Whom and What We Have Lost by N. Szajnberg, MD, Managing Editor

Jean Laplanche, a man as careful with words as a surgeon with scalpel, died this week. International Psychoanalysis.net will honor his life and work with three pieces: his 1991 *Is Psychoanalysis Curable* (courtesy of Jimmy Fisher); a classic translated by Jonathan House; and an interview.

In the *Curable,* piece below, Laplanche states that overusing psychoanalytic terms leads to ridicule; further, even in 1991, psychoanalysis was considered pass*.

Yet, for Laplanche, psychoanalysis * the method * leads to lucidity and freedom. These are subversive and even revolutionary activities.

I don*t know how many readers of International Psychoanalysis have seen the French Canadian film, Incendies. For those who have not seen it, I must warn you that this article will include important *spoilers,* so reader beware.

It is an award winning film, highly acclaimed, that brings the viewer to the horror and cruelty of war and of ethnic hatred amidst a story of incredible courage with the inevitable accompaniment of intense trauma. But that is not why I particularly bring Incendies to your attention. I thought that it might be of interest to analysts because it bears striking parallels with Sophocles* Oedipus Rex (perhaps more properly Oedipus Tyrannus).

Note that Laplanche was considered one of Lacan*s promising students. Yet, Laplanche is able to stay much closer to clinical work in a non-ambiguous, non-teasing, and more comprehensible manner than his teacher. Open Forum: What Neuropsychoanalysis Means to You

The dialogue between neuroscience and psychoanalysis continues to expand around the world. Psychoanalytic concepts appear in neuroscience journals with greater frequency (previously almost unheard of!), while neuroscience accelerates its exploration of processes of great relevance to psychoanalysis. Clinical work with neurological patients is expanding. Our overall picture of the mind/brain has been enriched by the neuropsychoanalytic interchange.

It seems a good time to take stock of what our community is passionate about, intrigued by, and involved in. How has neuropsychoanalysis affected your practice? How have psychoanalytic concepts catalyzed or enriched your neuroscience research? What topics in the intersection between the mind and brain are “hottest” for you right now?

This meeting will be an open forum, in which all can share on these questions and more. If you are a faithful attendee of neuropsychoanalytic meetings, we want to know what’s been useful to you over the years. If you are brand-new to this, we want to know what questions you are eager to engage with. This will be an opportunity to connect with colleagues around particular topics of interest, share vignettes about how neuropsychoanalysis has been woven into your clinical practice, research, or thinking, and more.

In advance of the forum, you are invited to share some of your thoughts in a survey, the results of which will be shared at the meeting. Even if you can’t attend, we would love to know about your experiences and ideas!

To participate in the survey, please click the following link:

Friday, May 18, 2012, 7 pm, $10 Suggested Donation
Presents a screening of The Night of the Hunter
followed by a psychoanalytic discussion with Leon Balter, M.D.

When The Night of the Hunter was released in 1955, it was met by the critics and the public with bewilderment and confusion. And, of course, it was a financial failure. It was the first and last film directed by the distinguished and celebrated English actor Charles Laughton. The film rapidly became a “cult classic.” And, since 1955, it has garnered a slow and progressive appreciation by film critics. It is currently always ranked among the 100 best films ever made. Laughton didn’t live to see its re-appraisal.

The reason for this strange history is that Laughton eschewed conventional film narrative. The film, as presented, is the subjective mentality of a ten year old boy. It does not present (as usual) an adult’s empathic view of the boy, but rather the boy’s actual perceptions and apperceptions of the world around him. That is the film. It took years for the critics and the public to understand this. The boy’s story is of traumatic destruction of his family during the Great Depression and the menace of a psychopathic killer.

The killer is played by Robert Mitchum. It is one of the two roles where he, the laziest actor in Hollywood, actually acts. (The other role is also of a psychopathic killer, in Cape Fear.) As a report goes: “Laughton approached Robert Mitchum. ‘Mitchum,’ he told him, ‘I’m directing this film, and there’s a character in it who is a diabolical shit.’ ‘Present,’ replied Mitchum.” (Callow, 2000) It was the most remarkable performance of Mitchum’s career, objectively and by his own account. “I didn’t know I could be so good,” he said after throwing up while watching himself in the rushes. (Jones, 2002)

The screen credit for the script went to the famous writer James Agee. In fact, Agee wrote a first draft that was enormous and unusable. It was based on the novel of the same name by Davis Grubb (1953). Laughton edited Agee’s script down to size. What was left comes virtually verbatim from the novel. Grubb wrote from a canny psychoanalytic perspective. (He was in psychotherapy at the time.) Laughton, in his directing, amplified this psychoanalytic orientation spectacularly. The Night of the Hunter is one of those rare instances where the film is greater than the novel from which it derives.
