Death: Instinct, Drive or Fantasy? Presenter: Arlene Kramer Richards, Ed.D Discussant: Stephen Leibow, MD, FRCPC This is a paper about the usefulness of the idea of death instinct. It compares the death instinct, death drive and unconscious or conscious fantasy of what happens after death.

Death and Immortality in Myth and Mind Presenter: Arnold D. Richards, MD Discussant: Joseph Fernando, MD This paper will be concerned with death and immortality fantasies. It proposes that the conscious and unconscious immortality fantasies operate in dreams and waking life. The wish for immortality is expressed in myths in many cultures and in religions as well.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

Evaluate the usefulness of the death instinct.
Compare the death instinct, death drive, and conscious or unconscious fantasy of what happens after death.
Understand how death and immortality fantasies operate in dreams, waking life, myths, and religion.
Apply knowledge of conscious and unconscious fantasies of death and immortality to clinical cases.

Arlene Kramer Richards, Ed.D is a Training and Supervising Analyst with the Contemporary Freudian Society and the International Psychoanalytical Association and a Fellow at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is also a poet. Dr. Richards was previously on the faculty at NYU and Smith College and is currently on the faculty at the CFS, IPTAR, and Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology at Wuhan, China. Dr. Richards has served on many IPA committees and boards, and was the North American representative from 2015-2017. She also leads ongoing Study Groups at the American Psychoanalytic Association including, Towards an Understanding of Loneliness and Aloneness (2001-present), Postmodern Feminism (2005-present), and Beauty (2009-Present). Dr. Richards is well known for her expertise on female development, sexuality, modern conflict theory, Freud, Hilda Doolittle, and unconscious fantasy. She has published and presented on many topics, including female sexuality, perversions, loneliness, beauty, jokes, telephone analysis, dreams, death, mourning, creativity, gambling, and the internal world of artists and poets. A collection of her major works was compiled in Psychoanalysis: Listening to Understand: Selected Papers of Arlene Kramer Richards, Nancy Goodman (Ed.) (2013) New York: IP Books. Along with Lucille Spira and Arthur Lynch, she was the recipient of the Gradiva Award for Encounters with Loneliness: Only the Lonely. In 2015, along with Spira, she published Myths of Mighty Women. In 2011, her poetry was published in The Laundryman’s Granddaughter: Poems by Arlene Kramer Richards, New York: IP Press. Dr. Richards is in private practice in New York City.

Arnold D. Richards, MD

Arnold D. Richards, MD is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and is on the faculty of the NYU and Mount Sinai Medical Schools, Departments of Psychiatry, the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and the Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology at Wuhan, China. He was Editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 1994 to 2003; before that he was the Editor of The American Psychoanalyst. In 2004, Dr. Richards received the Distinguished Contributor Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Richards received the Mary S. Sigourney Trust Honorary Award in 2000 for outstanding contributions to psychoanalysis and the Hans Loewald Award of the IFPE (2013). Among his many honours, Dr. Richards was the 47th AA Brill Lecturer of the New York Psychoanalytic Society; the New Jersey Psychoanalytic Freud Lecturer in 2015; the Sigmund Freud Award lecturer of the Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians in 2013; the plenary speaker of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2004, and he delivered the Leo Baeck Memorial Lecture in 2006. Dr. Richards has published on numerous psychoanalytic topics, including modern conflict theory, the Isakower phenomenon, narcissism, transference, psychoanalytic education, pluralism, dreams, Freud, religion, the replacement child, and self-mutilation. A collection of his works can be found in Controversial Conversations: Selected papers of Arnold Richards (2016), Volume 1, Arthur Lynch (Ed.). He has edited many books, including Psychoanalysis: The Science of Mental Conflict: Essays in Honor of Charles Brenner; Fantasy, Myth, and Reality: Essays in Honor of Jacob Arlow, and The Spectrum of Psychoanalysis: Essays in Honor of Martin S. Bergmann. Dr. Richards is the Editor of internationalpsychoanalysis.net and the Publisher of ipbooks.net.

Stephen Leibow, MD, FRCPC

Stephen Leibow, MD, FRCPC is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He is on faculty at the TPS&I, where he has taught on hysteria, phobias, obsessions, infantile neuroses, the Rat Man, and Ego Psychology. He has provided multiple presentations, including, his paper, “Work and Utopia, A Problematic Pair” and was a discussant for Horowitz’s, “Revenge and Masochism.” He recently published book reviews in JAPA on Spontaneity, and in the CJP on Creating a Psychoanalytic Mind. He is in private practice in psychoanalysis in Toronto.

Joseph Fernando, MD

Joseph Fernando MD is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He is past President of the TPS, and is presently Associate Director of the TIP and chair of the Student Progress Committee, and is on the faculty at the TIP. He was the recipient of 2010 Gradiva prize for his work, The Processes of Defense. He has provided national and international presentations on trauma. He has published papers on guilt, narcissism, the exceptions, and the superego. He is presently working on a book on trauma and zero process, and a book on psychoanalysis and the evolution of the human mind. He has been in private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for over 20 years in Toronto.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits are available. This event is an accredited group learning activity (section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certificate Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA).
