mitppnyc@aol.com · www.MITPP.org · on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn OPEN HOUSE LUNCHEON & CLINICAL PRESENTATION FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING Wednesday, May 9, 2018 1:00 PM –2:30 PM DIGGING DEEPER WITH AN ANXIOUS ADOLESCENT

A 15 year-old girl sought treatment for severe anxiety believing her symptoms were related primarily to fears that she would not achieve academic success. Beneath her academic distress were issues independent of academic achievement including an insecure attachment to her parents, and an enmeshment communicated both emotionally and physically. At times the patient expressed her feelings about her parents through rage, and at other times guilt, pity, sadness and fear of loss. These shifting expressions were often dependent upon the interplay with her therapist. The therapist regularly experienced a sense of constriction in the room, and the feeling that she “couldn’t get it right” in responding to the patient. These interactions provided the therapist with clues about the patient’s need to remain connected and attached while simultaneously becoming an autonomous individual.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will identify 1) how models of separation-individuation and attachment-individuation can guide us in understanding adolescent anxiety, 2) how the patient’s symptoms can be conceptualized using leading edge and trailing edge interpretations, 3) how our feelings and relational dynamics in the room with the patient can help us to better understand how the patient’s symptoms are affecting relationships with peers and family.
