THE BUDDHIST WHEEL OF LIFE AND DEATH AND PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2019 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
PRESENTER: PAUL C. COOPER, MS, LP
The Wheel of Life & Death functions as a pictorial representation of cyclic existence or “samsara.” It is comprised of a series of concentric circles that detail how the mind is structured and functions. It serves as a template for mapping out and understanding internal mental processes, the range of emotional and psychological states that contribute to our sense of identity and their behavioral manifestations that can contribute to identifying both internal and relational dynamics, which can expand our awareness and choices that in turn can contribute to healthy and constructive responses to self and others. This four-hour didactic and experiential workshop will examine the elements and dimensions of the wheel in relation to psychoanalytic concepts and practices with an eye toward personal growth and the therapeutic process and will include applications to clinical and meditation practice.
Learning objectives:
Participants will: 1) Develop enhanced psychoanalytic listening skills through the use and practice of insight oriented meditation, 2) become familiar with the Psychology of the Buddhist Wheel of Life & Death as it relates to psychotherapeutic technique, and 3) understand how the Buddhist notion of 12 links of dependent-arising relate to psychoanalytic theory and technique.
