Practitioners benefit from a focus on parental development or psychoanalytically informed parent guidance. Adult patients often are parents, some patients become parents during the course of treatment. Focusing on parenthood issues can enhance a treatment, but how this can be done is a gap rarely made explicit in many training arenas. Child and adolescent providers frequently experience inner resistance around forming an alliance with parents, a difficulty compounded by parent’s resistance to self-reflection. Our presenters discuss the details of grappling with these issues.
This workshop bridges this gap from three related vantage points: First Kerry Kelly Novick and Jack Novick will describe the intersection between the child’s needs and the parent’s lack of knowledge or intrapsychic conflict. Next Michael Krass will address the critical importance of parent work in conjunction with child and adolescent treatment, including specific outlining of issues related to the alliance with parents and the patient. Last Marsha Levy-Warren will explore the shifts that occur in adult psychoanalytic therapy relationships when parent guidance is part of the treatment. Included is identifying and addressing potential transference and countertransference problems.
Jack Novick, PhD, and Kerry Kelly Novick are child, adolescent and adult psychoanalysts on the faculties of numerous psychoanalytic institutes around the country. They are both Training and Supervising Analysts of the International Psychoanalytic Association. Jack received his Master’s Degree from the New School and his Ph.D at New York University. They both did their child analytic training with Anna Freud in London, England, where Jack completed child and adult training at the British Psycho-Analytic Institute. Kerry completed adult training at the Contemporary Freudian Society of New York. In addition to their clinical work, they have been very active in teaching, research, professional organizations, and the community. Jack and Kerry Novick have written extensively since the 1960’s, with over 100 articles published in major professional journals. Their five books (including Working with Parents Makes Therapy Work) are used in many psychoanalytic, social work and residency trainings, and have been translated into several languages.
Michael Krass, PhD, is a psychoanalyst in Falls Church, VA and Washington, DC who has worked clinically with children and adolescents and their parents, as well as with adults for the past 30 years. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the George Washington University. He is a training and supervising analyst at and teaches in the Contemporary Freudian Society- Psychoanalytic Training Institute and has also taught in the CFS Contemporary Trends Program, at Johns Hopkins University and the Washington School of Psychiatry. He is the former clinical director of the Center for Children in Maryland and previously served as the consulting psychology supervisor at the Center for Mental Health in Washington, DC. He presents and writes frequently on unconscious fantasy in people with neurodiversity, the analyst’s use of reverie and on the use of dreams in analytic work. In addition, he leads an ongoing discussion group on working analytically with children, teens and adults on the autism spectrum and co-leads a discussion group on managing impingements on the analyst’s containing function at the American Psychoanalytic Association annual meetings.
Marsha H. Levy-Warren, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst who writes, teaches, lectures, and consults both nationally and internationally. She is the author of The Adolescent Journey (Jason Aronson, 1996; reissued by Rowman and Littlefield, 2004), and numerous articles on clinical and developmental theory, adolescence, and various aspects of culture. She is Past-President of The Contemporary Freudian Society (CFS), a component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), and a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst in The CFS, Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS), and the IPA. She is currently Director of The Child/Adolescent Training Program at CFS. She also is an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology and a Clinical Consultant in New York University’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Psychology and The Journal of Child, Infant, and Adolescent Psychotherapy. Dr. Levy-Warren has a clinical practice with adolescents and adults, and a consulting practice with parents on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop participants will be able to:
1. Describe some common maturational needs as well as some typical ways that development
can stall.
2. Distinguish lack of information versus conflict on the part of the parent.
3. Identify and respond to common parental anxieties provoked by each developmental phase.
4. Differentiate varied approaches to working with parents
5. Address interferences in the work arising from parents or themselves
6. Support parental consolidation in the developmental phase of parenthood.
7. Articulate three potential transferential and countertransferential problems in working with adult patients who present parent guidance issues in their treatments.
8. Articulate how to conceptualize the shift in the treatment relationship that occurs when parent guidance issues are addressed in a psychoanalytic treatment.
