Returning to Freud and Lacan, this seminar will reflect on the function that knowledge and belief play in the subject’s relation to the world. Denial, disavowal, foreclusion—and their subjective and collective implications—will be explored, as well as the differences between unconscious and conscious knowledge, between savoir, connaissance and savoir faire.
Readings for February 7th: S. Freud, On the Sexual Theories of Children (1908); Repression (1915); The Economic Problem of Masochism (1924); J. Lacan, Seminar 1, Chapters XXI, XXII.
Paola Mieli is a psychoanalyst practicing in New York City. She is the president of Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association (New York), a member of Le Cercle Freudien (Paris), Espace Analytique (Paris), The European Federation of Psychoanalysis (Strasbourg), and an Associate Researcher at the Centre de Recherches en Psychanalyse, Médicine et Société at the University of Paris VII–Diderot. She is the author of numerous essays on psychoanalysis and on culture.

Continuing Education
Ten (10) CE credits will be granted to Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Psychoanalysts who have registered, have documented evidence of attendance of all five meetings of the seminar, and complete the evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements. Credits cannot be given for partial attendance.

1) Describe the distinction between conscious and unconscious knowledge.
2) Differentiate denial and disavowal in their clinical manifestations.
3) Identify the ways in which knowledge functions in the trajectory of a psychoanalytic cure.
