Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism: Between Literature and Mind by Benjamin H. Ogden offers a strikingly and refreshingly innovative take on interdisciplinarity. The reader finds herself plunged into the depths and mesmerizing wonders of the power of interdisciplinarity in its rawest and truest form, that is, away from the banal and often tedious application of psychoanalytic readings of fiction and into the exciting, engaging, and highly sophisticated field that Ogden poignantly and diligently both creates and writes before the reader’s eye: an experiment of both mind, and dare I say, of the heart, capturing in the most spirited and vibrant ways, how dialogues between psychoanalysis and literature can illuminate, recapture, originate, and make alive again, the meaning of both fields.

Benjamin H. Ogden will discuss his new book in conversation with Bruce Reis and Masha Mimran and with participants of this Friday Night Papers series, thinking together about ways in which psychoanalysis and literary fiction can and do learn from each other. On that evening, and similarly to Benjamin H. Ogden’s new book, Friday Night Papers hopes to open up a space where fiction, poetry, analytic thinking and psychoanalytic criticism, all converge together in a starry constellation that makes meaning anew.

Benjamin H. Ogden, Ph.D.

Benjamin H. Ogden is Assistant Teaching Professor in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology. He co-authored the Routledge title The Analyst’s Ear and the Critic’s Eye: Rethinking Psychoanalysis and Literature with Thomas H. Ogden. He has written for the New York Times Book Review, Times Literary Supplement, and authored numerous academic articles on the work of authors such as J.M. Coetzee, Samuel Beckett, and William Faulkner.

Bruce Reis, Ph.D., FIPA

Bruce Reis, Ph.D., FIPA, is a Fellow and Faculty Member at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, New York; an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis; and a member of the Boston Change Process Study Group. He is North American book review editor for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and serves on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, and Psychoanalytic Dialogues. He is the co-editor (with Robert Grossmark) of Heterosexual Masculinities and author of Creative Repetition and Intersubjectivity (2020).

Masha Mimran, Ph.D. received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University (2011) and formerly taught in the French Department at Barnard College. Currently, she is an advanced candidate at IPTAR and co-president with Marissa Dennis-Kantor of the Candidates’ Organization. She recently had the pleasure of writing a review for Benjamin H. Ogden’s Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism: Between Literature and Mind (IJP, 2019).
