THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY 160 West 86th Street, New York, NY 10024 ∙  (212) 496-2858 info@mitpp.org∙ www.MITPP.org ∙ on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn A TWO-SESSION ONLINE WORKSHOP MAKING IT UP AS WE GO ALONG:  THE NECESSITY OF CHANGING OUR PRACTICE OF PSYCHOTHERAPY  IN THE AGE OF COVID-19 AND HOW WE DO IT SATURDAY, JUNE 6 and SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2020   10:30 AM – 12:30 PM PRESENTER: THERESE S. ROSENBLATT, PH.D.

The advent of the COVID 19 Pandemic and Shelter in Place has caused us to change the way we practice psychotherapy. But how and when and why? We have no guidelines and each of us as therapists are left to our own devices, making it up as we go along. The twin complications of doing all of our work online or on the phone, plus the fact that our patients and we are going through this crisis alone and together simultaneously for the very first time ever, necessitates changes in our approaches as therapists. What are the challenges and variables that come up when we are not seeing our patients face to face for an open-ended period of time? How does that affect our work? What happens when the conditions of therapy and the world are as new to us as they are to our patients and we may be grappling with many of the same feelings as they are at the very same time?  We may have lost some of our authority as therapists that many theorists think we never had. Can we help our patients as more of a partner and less of a leader? Do we disclose more, work harder to keep the connection?  How do we listen sensitively to how patients’ fears, wishes, priorities and relationships are changing, as ours are, too? These and other related challenges will be discussed in this workshop.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn to: 1) identify new clinical challenges posed by the COVID 19 Pandemic, Shelter In Place and working exclusively virtually with patients, 2) identify changes in technique necessitated by the conditions imposed by the COVID 19 Pandemic, Shelter in Place and working exclusively virtually with patients, and 3) improve trust in your own clinical judgment and intuition in combination with the established standards of theory and technique in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
