How we listen, what we listen for, what we choose to say, and when we choose to say it are at the core of psychoanalytic practice.

With the help of readings and clinical vignettes, participants will learn what it means to listen as analysts, using all of our senses.  Moment by moment, we attend to the multiple layers of symbolic communication and implicit memories, including unconscious wishes, fears, and conflicts, that are embedded in each patient’s overt narrative and presentation.  We endeavor to identify the transference and its effect on us in the countertransference.  It is through these efforts that we aim to deepen our understanding of how patients relate to their internal and external worlds.  This information guides how we respond and intervene in ways that will be useful to the patient.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
1. Define the concept of analytic listening.
2. Discern possible symbolic meanings hidden in the manifest communication.
3. Understand the value of using the countertransference as a tool to deepen their understanding of how patients relate to their internal and external worlds.
