On a fundamental level, psychoanalysts listen. How we listen, what we listen for, what we say, and when we say it form the core of psychoanalytic practice. By discussing readings and clinical vignettes, participants will learn about what it means to listen and how to listen as analysts using all of our senses. Moment by moment, we attend to the multiple layers of communication – hearing implicit memories, unconscious wishes, fears, and conflicts embedded in each patient’s overt narrative and presentation. We try to identify and listen to the transference and its effect on us, the countertransference, and by so doing, deepen our understanding of how patients experience and relate to their internal and external worlds. This information guides how we respond and allows us to intervene in ways useful to the patient.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
1. Define the concept of analytic listening.
2. Discern possible symbolic meanings hidden in manifest communications.
3. Understand the value of using the transference and the countertransference as tools to deepen their understanding of how patients experience and relate to their internal and external worlds.
