CLINICAL CHALLENGES AND THOSE UNIQUE TO GIRLS OF COLOR SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2020 PRESENTER: KIM ARRINGTON, PSY.D.
This clinical workshop will center on issues in treating adolescent girls with a particular focus on the biracial adolescent. Dr. Arrington will describe the treatment of a 16 year-old biracial girl who suffered from issues of loss and abandonment. Treatment concerns specific to biracial and adolescent girls of color will be emphasized, including the biases and countertransference inherent in clinical settings that may impact the treatment of these girls. Dr. Arrington will also speak to the intersectionality* experienced by adolescent girls of color in clinical settings.

1) Understand the most common clinical issues confronting adolescent girls in general and girls of color in particular.
2) Develop an awareness of the intersectionality experienced by adolescent girls of color in clinical settings.
3) Recognize biases and countertransference inherent in clinical settings that may impact the treatment of girls of color in general and mixed race girls in particular.

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,200 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
