This presentation intends to show how the current Brazilian government has been using the language and aesthetics of the Third Reich in its statements to the nation and its institutional advertisements, in accord with its stance toward fascism. This development does not, however, seem to be exclusive to Brazil: the fascist state of mind has been spreading in other “democracies” across the planet.

Overview  

A traumatized Cambodian mother and child were seen forensically by a senior psychoanalyst. The task was assisted by psychoanalytic self-awareness and countertransferential knowledge.  Mother, a Pol Pot survivor was raped in a chaotic refugee camp during her childhood.  Her daughter was, years later, sexually harassed in a negligent U.S. kindergarten.  Transgenerational influences were powerful sources of psychological damage for both mother and child.   Videorecordings of interviews will be shown during the seminar.  Epigenesis, moral injury and betrayal effects will be discussed as will the persisting attachment from prior in-person interviews in facilitating the online work.  The report and a deposition resulted in a generous financial settlement.

NYPSI Extension Program: Psychoanalytic Principles of Child Development
This is a course designed to help students better understand child development phases from a psychoanalytic perspective: the pre-oedipal, oedipal, latency, and early, middle and late adolescent phases.  The course will highlight how certain issues affect child development at the different stages:  sibling trauma, separation  anxiety, beating fantasies, the origin and evolution of childhood narcissism, family romance fantasies (oedipal and latency fantasies) and object removal in adolescence.  The discussion of these universal childhood fantasies is facilitated by a study of certain classical papers and current considerations of these issues. Returning to Freud’s considerations on repetition in the analytic experience as a form of past behavior that emerges in the present, this seminar will study repetition in its dual aspect, both as an insistence of the signifying chain and as an encounter with an object missed by definition.
