Lacan’s thesis “the unconscious is structured like a language” seems to contradict his later suggestion that certain languages are better suited than others for the practice and theory of psychoanalysis. We will focus on Lacan’s relation to English, and further elaborate on the themes dealt with in the book Lacan et la Langue Anglaise (Cléro, Essaim, 2017). “PLURALITY AND CONTEXTUALISM IN A PSYCHOTHERAPY RESEARCH PROGRAM: REDUX 2018” MODERATOR: GEOFF GOODMAN, PH.D.

Jacques Barber’s presentation:

What do we know about the efficacy of dynamic therapy for specific disorders? For years, psychodynamic therapy has been under attack for not being sufficiently empirical. Interestingly both friends and foes are not sufficiently aware of the outcome literature. This presentation will address this gap in knowledge and present systematic reviews addressing the efficacy of dynamic therapy for depression, anxiety disorders and personality disorders. I will delve in greater depth into examining the question of what treatment works for whom. I will suggest a way this kind of critical question for our field can be Continue reading FROM PRACTICE TO RESEARCH: PSYCHOTHERAPY RESEARCH ENTERS THE PSYCHOANALYTIC CLINIC at IPTAR

This paper discusses the different ways a developmental point of view enriches and informs our work. It focuses on that aspect of the developmental point of view that has to do with the development of reflective functioning; specifically, how we, as therapists, make room for thinking with both our child and our adult patients. The complex relationship between the development of self/object differentiation and the development of reflective functioning is discussed. The role of therapy in the facilitation of this relationship is illustrated from the therapist’s own experience. In addition, the importance in child Continue reading Room for thought: a developmental perspective” with Kate Oram at IPTAR

NYPSI Extension Program: Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy
This course will present results of an ongoing collaborative research by two analysts working in two different modalities – individual and couple. The comparison of the dynamics in the two settings reveals many new issues and questions. For instance: Is there an unconscious organization of the couple distinct from the unconscious organizations of the individuals in it? What are the differences between the individual’s transferences to the analyst and to the patient’s partner? How much can the analyst know about the patient’s partner? At every meeting the instructors will present clinical material illustrating these and other issues.

4.5 CME/CE credits offered Continue reading Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy with Graciela Abelin-Sas Rose, M.D. & Peter Mezan, Ph.D. at NYPSI
