This paper discusses the different ways a developmental point of view enriches and informs our work. It focuses on that aspect of the developmental point of view that has to do with the development of reflective functioning; specifically, how we, as therapists, make room for thinking with both our child and our adult patients. The complex relationship between the development of self/object differentiation and the development of reflective functioning is discussed. The role of therapy in the facilitation of this relationship is illustrated from the therapist’s own experience. NYPSI Extension Program: Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy
This course will present results of an ongoing collaborative research by two analysts working in two different modalities – individual and couple. The comparison of the dynamics in the two settings reveals many new issues and questions. For instance: Is there an unconscious organization of the couple distinct from the unconscious organizations of the individuals in it? What are the differences between the individual’s transferences to the analyst and to the patient’s partner? How much can the analyst know about the patient’s partner? At every meeting the instructors will present clinical material illustrating these and other issues.

The paper describes the evolution of so called post-Kleinian analysis and its current style as exemplified in the work of Ronald Britton. The development of a method of using psychoanalysis with young children largely based on the application of dream analysis to children’s play made considerable changes to adult analysis. A child case is described that illustrates manifest recapitulation in play of an immediate life trauma and its segregation from the primitive phantasy that existed in the child’s frightening dream life.
