Overview
The current coronavirus pandemic has laid bare two societies living along lines of class and race – a divided country.  Just as we were coming out of the tragic circumstances of living with COVID19 in New York, the murder of George Floyd forced us to see what we previously ignored. It merged the plagues of police brutality, prejudice, racism. The hatred that we have been denying, turning a blind eye and covering up for decades came to the fore. While the issues around the pandemic, corruption and racism occur daily around the world, they also live inside of us – in the internal world of all individuals and couples.
We are living in a time where people are afraid of one another – of disease, contagion, uncertainty, mistrust, ignorance, doubt, entitlement, etc.  The potential to inflict harm manifests itself in many ways, both internally and externally which will be explored.
In this presentation, Dr. Eskin will explore destructiveness, the potential to inflict harm and the very act of silence which is a crime against humanity.

Micro states of perceived and real attack plus retaliation occur all of the time between individuals and couples who come in for psychoanalytic therapy. Working to help our patients develop curiosity about the gap between their perception and reality assists in disentangling the negative patterns that could lead to tension, fighting, blame and threats. Helping people talk through what is unspoken and making explicit in a couple therapy, the partners’ different wishes and needs can be enlightening. Individual psychoanalytic work in the transference will also be examined.

Vivian Eskin, PhD is a Training and Supervisory Psychoanalyst (The Contemporary Freudian Society, NY); graduate of the Anni Bergman Parent infant Program and graduate of Tavistock Relationships, London, UK (QD, Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy), who practices, supervises and teaches on the Upper West side of Manhattan.  She is the director of the Contemporary Psychoanalytic Couple Psychotherapy program of NYC, a CE platform that provides continuing education courses and seminars on psychoanalysis and couple psychotherapy, taught by herself and world-renown scholars.  Dr. Eskin is on faculty at The Contemporary Freudian Society (Adult Psychoanalytic Program) and The Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and has taught electives on Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at IPTAR. She presents widely on topics related to individual and couple psychoanalysis. She is a member of the IPA, APA, CFS, IPTAR, CIPS, NASW and British Council of Couple Psychotherapists. She has served on the board of CFS as Member at Large and was a past co-chair of the CFS NY Scientific Programs and Continuing Education.

Learning objectives:
1. Participants will be able to discuss how the difficult conditions that play out in the world today shed light on similar conflicts in our inner world.
2. Participants will be able to explain projection in the psychoanalytic situation
3. Participants will be able to identify and explain the means by which to help patients manage their anxieties within the transference.

Social Workers: The Social Work Boards of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia will grant continuing education credits to social workers attending a program offered by an APA authorized sponsor, provided they comply with the requirements stated above for Psychologists.

Professional Counselors:  The Boards of Professional Counselors in the District of Columbia and Virginia will accept continuing education credits for Counselors attending a program offered by an APA-authorized sponsor, provided they comply with the requirements stated above for psychologists.  The Board of Professional Counselors in Maryland will accept CE credits granted by a program that is recognized by the Maryland Board of Examiners for Psychologists and Social Workers.

Social Workers: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 1.5 CE credits.
