Teens may never be the same after the pandemic . . .
CONSIDERATIONS FOR OUR WORK WITH THE ADOLESCENT COHORT FRIDAY, MAY 29, and FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2020 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM PRESENTER: STACEY BRAFFETT, LCSW-R
The COVID-19 pandemic will have an extraordinary impact on teens in ways we are only beginning to fathom. As a group we will honor and contemplate their shared experiences, which include: arrested emotional development, a fracturing sense of self, and profound grief and loss through several psychoanalytic lenses.
A brief presentation summarizing the unique challenges adolescents must navigate in these frightening and uncertain times will be followed by a lively group discussion informed by our own clinical and personal experiences. Video interviews/vignettes with teens about their current fears and anxieties (viewed in advance of our meetings) will inform and amplify these conversations.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
1. Consider modifications in the frame to best address the simultaneous trauma we as clinicians and patients must endure together.
2. Help our adolescent patients develop a language to express their affective states and legitimize their collective and idiosyncratic experiences in these unprecedented times.
3. Explore the influence of anxiety producing isolation and uncertainty on both the transference, and how the adolescent may need to lean on us as an alternative object in reality.

MITPP, originally established in 1962 to train MCMH clinicians and chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,200 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis and, upon matriculation, are applied toward a certificate. Candidates begin seeing patients as soon as they are processed.
