Dear Candidate is a book comprised of letters from analysts around the world describing their experiences while candidates themselves, as well as offering advice to their younger colleagues currently in the midst of their psychoanalytic education. Three of those analysts and the editor will be in discussion with three candidates who will have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.  This conversation among colleagues at different stages of their careers will expand to include all participants in the Zoom room!

Fred Busch, PhD is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Busch has published over 70 articles in the psychoanalytic literature, and five books, primarily on the method and theory of treatment. His work has been translated into ten languages, and he has been invited to present over 160 papers and clinical workshops nationally and internationally. His last three books were: Creating a Psychoanalytic Mind; The Analyst’s Reveries: Explorations in Bion’s Enigmatic Concept; and Dear Candidate: Analyst from Around the World Offer Personal Reflections on Psychoanalytic Training, Education, and the Profession. All published by Routledge. He has been on numerous editorial boards.

James Curley-Egan, LP is an advanced candidate at CFS, is a Licensed Psychoanalyst in New York State, and has a PhD in Comparative Literature.  He is broadly interested in questions of narrative, affect, and reading.

Stefany Fortin, MSc, MScOT, LMSW is a first-year Psychoanalytic candidate at the Psycho-analytic Association of New York (PANY). She worked as an occupational therapist in Montreal both in and out-patient adult psychiatry. She has been in NY since 2015 where she currently has a private practice with a special interest in the treatment of women pregnant after a pregnancy loss.

Theodore J. Jacobs, MD is the author of three books. The Year of Durocher, a comic, coming of age novel, and two books of essays on psychoanalysis: The Possible Profession; The Analytic Process of Change, and The Use of the Self: Countertransference and Communication in the Analytic Situation. He is also co-editor with Arnold Rothstein of On Beginning an Analysis, and over sixty papers on a variety of psychoanalytic topics. Theodore J. Jacobs, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and training and supervising analyst at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute and The Institute for Psychoanalytic Education where he is also a child supervising analyst. He is a Life Fellow of The American Psychiatric Association, and a member of The American Psychoanalytic Association, and The Association for Child Psychoanalysis, and a Fellow of The American College of Psychoanalysts.  Dr. Jacobs is former President of The Association for Child Psychoanalysis and former member of the review board of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He is a member of the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, where he is also a member of the Board of Directors, Psychoanalytic Inquiry and The Journal of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. He has been the recipient of many honors, including being The Freud Anniversary Lecture at both the New York and IPE Institutes, the Brill Lecturer at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Plenary Address at The American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Jacobs sees both children and adults in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.

Michael Krass, PhD is a supervising and training analyst with the CFS, where he is also a vice president and president-elect of the board.  He teaches in the CFS-Psychoanalytic Training Institute and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at George Washington University. He has has been leading an ongoing APsaA discussion group and recently chaired a conference on the impact of the neurobiology of autism on unconscious fantasy, a topic about which he has presented many papers. He also co-leads an ongoing APsaA discussion group on impingements on the analytic container and writes about D.W. Winnicott, the psychodynamics of creativity and about the analyst’s use of reverie.  He has a practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy with adults, psychotherapy with children and supervision in Falls Church, VA and Washington, DC.

Margaret Laracy, PsyD is a clinical psychologist in practice in Bethesda, MD working with adults and adolescents. She is a fourth-year candidate with the Contemporary Freudian Society, DC.

Fredric Perlman, PhD is a Graduate of the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR). He is on the institute faculty of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, where he teaches foundation courses on the writings of Sigmund Freud. He previously taught psychoanalytic theory at the Postgraduate Center and at IPTAR, where he was a Training and Supervising Analyst. He is a past president of IPTAR, served two terms as the president of the Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies, and has served on the executive bodies of the IPA, APsaA, and NAPsaC. He is the Series Editor for the CIPS Book Series on the Boundaries of Psychoanalysis.

Barbara Stimmel, PhD Contemporary Freudian Society Training and Supervising Analyst and Former President; Metropolitan Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists, Faculty and Supervisor; International Psychoanalytical Association: Former Associate Secretary, North American Chair, Berlin Congress; Mt. Sinai School of Medicine,Department of Psychiatry, Clinical Assistant Professor.  Dr. Stimmel has published in the major psychoanalytic journals and her paper, “From Nothing to Something to Everything,” was nominated for the JAPA journal prize. She edited Martin Stein’s papers and has several chapters in various analytic texts. She has a chapter in: A Contemporary Approach to Clinical Supervision: The Supervisee Perspective. Routledge, Spring 2021.

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1.   Compare their own training experiences to those of experienced analysts and to recognize the ubiquity of the challenges entailed in psychoanalytic training.

2.   Describe different phases of analytic training and the characteristics of each phase.

3.   Identify the ways that analytic training fits within the larger framework of a profession as an analyst and as a mental health practitioner.

Who Should Attend:

The instructional level for this activity is advanced.  Mental Health Pro-fessionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors); those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoana-lytic thinking and clinical applications; and social scientists with an interest in the intersection of sociology and psychoanalysis.

NY Social Workers: The PTI-CFS is recognized by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social work-ers #0087

NY Psychoanalysts: The PTI-CFS is recognized by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for li-censed psychoanalysts #P-0021.

NY Licensed Psychologists: The PTI-CFS is recognized by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provide of continuing education for Licensed Psy-chologists #PSY-0017.

DC, MD and VA Psychologists: The CFS is approved by the American Psychological Associa-tion to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

DC, MD and VA Social Workers: The Social Work Boards of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia will grant continuing education credits to social workers attending a program offered by an APA authorized sponsor.

CE credits will only be granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form.  No partial credit will be offered.  It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements.  Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 2 CE credits.
