Psychoanalytic Brooklyn: Invites you to join us for a virtual continuing education seminar Deepening the Treatment with Jane S. Hall, LCSW, FIPA Friday, June 12, 2020 2:00-3:30pm

Even as the site of our work shifts to phone or video, many of our patients can benefit from intensive psychotherapy. In this online presentation and discussion, participants will think about, and learn, how to engage patients in a deeper psychodynamic treatment — rather than the once-a-week counseling they frequently ask for. We will focus on strengthening the therapists’ conviction and fostering their skills in inviting the patient to consider the commitment involved in intensive treatment. We also will focus on listening for transference/counter-transference manifestations from the first contact. The roadblocks on the journey of psychotherapy, and the utility of the frame will be discussed. Attention will be paid to the unique challenges associated with establishing and deepening treatments in the time of the pandemic, using video or telephone. A new idea on free association will be offered.

Jane S. Hall, LCSW, FIPA, past President of the Contemporary Freudian Society, is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association, and elected North American representative to the IPA Board (2017 -). She is also a member of the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work (AAPCSW). A Training and Supervising Analyst who teaches, lectures, and consults on how to deepen psychoanalytic work, Hall is the author of: Roadblocks on the Journey of Psychotherapy (2004) and Deepening the Treatment (1998) and other articles. She is on the faculty of the Contemporary Freudian Society, the New York School for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and the Metropolitan Institute, and was a founder of the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and the first director of the Contemporary Freudian Society Psychotherapy Program. She is on the editorial board member of The American Psychoanalyst (TAP), and was a past editor of Psychoanalysis.Today. A graduate of the Hunter College School of Social Work, the Institute for the Study of Psychotherapy, and the Contemporary Freudian Society, Hall is in private practice in New York City.

Learning objectives:

At the end of this hour-and-a-half didactic/experiential workshop (providing 1.5 CEUs), participants will have learned to do the following:

1) Identify and navigate the roadblocks to connecting with patients so that intensive psychotherapy can occur;

2) Identify countertransference and realistic pressures that interfere with the deepening process.

Who Should Attend:

The instructional level for this activity is advanced. Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors) and those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.

Continuing Education Credits:

Social Workers: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 1.5 CE credits.

Psychoanalysts: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychoanalysts #P-0021. Many, if not most, of our patients can benefit from psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. How to engage these patients in this intensive work, as opposed to the once-a-week counseling they frequently ask for, is the topic of this seminar. One focus will be strengthening the therapist’s conviction and fostering his/her skill in allowing the patient to consider the commitment involved in intensive treatment. Another focus will include listening for transference/countertransference manifestations from the first telephone contact. The roadblocks on the journey of psychotherapy, including the concept of the “frame”, will be discussed, along with how to deepen the work, including shifting the treatment to psychoanalysis. Participants are encouraged to bring vignettes.
