Honoring Jack and Kerry Kelly Novick Focusing on their Latest Publication: “Freedom to Choose: Two Systems of Self-Regulation”

At this event we will celebrate Jack and Kerry Novick’s contributions to our field, with special emphasis on their most recent book, “Freedom to Choose: Two Systems of Self-Regulation.” This is a fitting focus, as the book articulates a central strand of their developmental and clinical thinking from early work on beating fantasies in the 1960s, through writings on sadomasochism, to more recent formulations of a model of two systems of self-regulation.
The evening is planned as a collaborative engagement among the speakers and the audience, with the goal of thinking together about how psychoanalytic ideas evolve and can be made useful and accessible. Well known for their clarity and warmth, the Novicks will share experiences to illustrate their work. They will be joined by two distinguished colleagues, Donna Roth Smith and Kim Kleinman, who will talk about ways they have applied some of the Novicks’ concepts and technical approaches.
This program will expose participants to the concept of focusing on the open system/closed system concept as it pertains to developmental achievements, as well as the treatment process.

Jack Novick and Kerry Kelly Novick are child, adolescent and adult psychoanalysts on the faculties of numerous psychoanalytic institutes around the country, including the Contemporary Freudian Society. They are both Training and Supervising Analysts of the International Psychoanalytic Association. Jack and Kerry did their child analytic training with Anna Freud in London, England. Jack completed adult training at the British Psycho-Analytical Society and Kerry graduated from the CFS. In addition to their clinical work, they have been very active in teaching, research, professional organizations, and the community. Jack and Kerry Novick have written extensively since the 1960’s, with over 100 articles published in major professional journals. Their four earlier books are used in many psychoanalytic, social work and residency trainings, and have been translated into several languages. Their fifth book, “Freedom to Choose: Two Systems of Self-Regulation,” was published by IP books in late 2016.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:
1. Apply a life-cycle perspective to clinical work with patients of all ages.
2. Differentiate open-system and closed-system aspects of functioning.
3. Include two-systems techniques in clinical work and supervision.
