Jacques Barber’s presentation:

What do we know about the efficacy of dynamic therapy for specific disorders? For years, psychodynamic therapy has been under attack for not being sufficiently empirical. Interestingly both friends and foes are not sufficiently aware of the outcome literature. This presentation will address this gap in knowledge and present systematic reviews addressing the efficacy of dynamic therapy for depression, anxiety disorders and personality disorders. I will delve in greater depth into examining the question of what treatment works for whom. I will suggest a way this kind of critical question for our field can be answered in collaboration between practitioners and researchers. In addition, I will provide some updated data on the role of the therapeutic alliance and insight as mechanism of change in dynamic therapy.

Chris Muran’s presentation:

This colloquium will introduce the Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Research Program as a center for the study of the therapeutic relationship. The program can be understood as organized around the iterative development and evaluation of: a model of alliance rupture resolution, an alliance-focused treatment condition, and an alliance-focused training protocol. Many of the principles derived from this program are consistent with contemporary psychoanalytic theories on intersubjectivity and basic research on interpersonal communication and emotion regulation. The program is designed to assess change on multiple dimensions by multiple measures from multiple perspectives and on three levels of analysis: ultimate, intermediate, and immediate outcome. The colloquium will present a sampling of studies illustrating the work accomplished at each level. Studies supported by grant awards from the National Institute of Mental Health will be emphasized.

1. To introduce participants to the design of a research program and its various approaches to assessing change.
2. To introduce participants to findings regarding alliance ruptures, rupture resolution, and alliance-focused training
3. To explain to your peers why naturalistic studies as well as randomized clinical trials with control groups are important to examine treatment effectiveness and efficacy.
4. To explain to your peers why psychodynamic therapy is a viable treatment option for some patients.
