M. Gerard Fromm, Ph.D. Erikson Institute, Austen Riggs Center Travelling through Time: A Group Intervention  in Northern Ireland.
This presentation will report on a one-time group intervention with politicians and civic leaders in Northern Ireland during a time of escalating violence.  Time permitting, we will also discuss a more recent intervention with Unionist civic leaders. The first intervention was carried out by a team from the International Dialogue Initiative.  It attempted to learn about and in a sense “diagnose” the emotional, psychological obstacles to future efforts to solve problems between these opposing groups. Vamik Volkan was the team leader, and our work was to some degree based on his ideas about large group identity, chosen trauma and impediments to societal mourning.

M. Gerard Fromm, PhD is a Distinguished Faculty member of the Erikson Institute for Education and Research at the Austen Riggs Center.  Former Director of the Institute, he began an organizational consulting service for the local community and directed an annual working conference for regional counseling services.  He has taught at, and consulted to a number of psychoanalytic institutes across the United States, and is a partner in College Health and Counseling Service Consulting, LLC.  He is both a past President of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations and the Center for the Study of Groups and Social Systems in Boston.  Jerry has directed or served on the staff of Group Relations Conferences in the US, Canada, Europe and Israel.  Currently, he serves as President of the International Dialogue Initiative, an interdisciplinary group that studies the psychodynamics of societal conflict.  An author and editor of four books, he has also written many journal articles.  Jerry can be contacted at gerard.fromm@austenriggs.net.
