REGISTER HERE: Dr. Sidney Phillips is a distinguished Freudian analyst who has been working with issues of gender and sexual diversity for over thirty years. He will present his most recent work, a paper entitled On Being “Cool”, which examines how “coolness” functions as a masculine masquerade that is implicated in both racist and homophobic processes. After situating the term “cool” in a historical framework, Dr. Phillips takes up the tensions between identification and object love as they play out in the life and work of a “cool” icon, James Dean, as well as in a clinical vignette.  Yukari Yanagino will elaborate on the intersectional nature of “coolness” as they respond to Dr. Phillips’ paper.
There will be substantial time for Q & A towards the end of the  workshop.
