NYPSI Extension Program: Psychoanalytic Principles of Child Development
This is a course designed to help students better understand child development phases from a psychoanalytic perspective: the pre-oedipal, oedipal, latency, and early, middle and late adolescent phases. The course will highlight how certain issues affect child development at the different stages: sibling trauma, separation anxiety, beating fantasies, the origin and evolution of childhood narcissism, family romance fantasies (oedipal and latency fantasies) and object removal in adolescence. The discussion of these universal childhood fantasies is facilitated by a study of certain classical papers and current considerations of these issues. Returning to Freud’s considerations on repetition in the analytic experience as a form of past behavior that emerges in the present, this seminar will study repetition in its dual aspect, both as an insistence of the signifying chain and as an encounter with an object missed by definition.
