This eight-week course will examine Hans Loewald’s writings and their influence on contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice. Loewald’s role as both an extender and modifier of tradition, a “radical conservative,” will be explored. While firmly rooted in Freudian theory and the structural model, Loewald’s work will be viewed as providing a platform for considering interaction with others as constitutive of mind.
