THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY, THE METROPOLITAN CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH, and THE METROPOLITAN SOCIETY FOR PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPISTS invite you to A CLINICAL WORKSHOP/CONVERSATION ON RACE AND CULTURE: ENGAGING WITH DIFFERENCE IN TREATMENT
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2019 PRESENTER: DEBRA GILL, LCSW
When the therapist’s racial and/or cultural worlds are overtly different from the patient’s, barriers to trust need to be recognized and addressed.  Enactments around difference, when understood, have the potential to facilitate analytic engagement. In this workshop, we will consider how our own conscious and unconscious attitudes about “difference” are thought about and how we prepare ourselves to both receive projections and recognize how the unconscious locates opportunity for the repetition of unresolved trauma in the transference. In this workshop, we will discuss treatments that have the added dimension of racial and/or cultural difference in the analytic relationship. Relying on both contemporary psychoanalytic literature and clinical experience, we will think about how the traumatic impact of racism, in particular, is brought into the analytic dyad.  While misunderstandings and disillusionment emerge, we have the opportunity to widen the intersubjective field which allows for mourning, creativity and growth. Participants are encouraged to discuss their own experiences and clinical work.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify the ways in which conscious and unconscious attitudes towards racial and cultural difference enter treatment.

2. Recognize and discuss how unconscious trauma is repeated in the transference.

3. Discuss techniques to recognize and work through enactments with the goal of deepening the analytic process.
