OPEN HOUSE & CLINICAL PRESENTATION FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING  Tuesday, March 10, 2020 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
SHARING THE THERAPIST:  THE TREATMENT OF SISTERS FROM AN ENMESHED FAMILY

A unique situation presented itself when the younger sister of a teenager who had been in treatment with a therapist in a clinic setting was assigned to the same therapist. Before work began, consultation with clinic administration and clinical supervisors was held as well as with the older sister who was first in treatment. It was agreed that the opportunity for these sisters to develop unique relationships with the therapist, respecting boundaries of the work and their individual therapeutic relationships, were clinical outcomes worth pursuing. A complicating factor was the necessary involvement of parents when working with children and teens. Because the family had blurred boundaries, the various relationship pairings in the work risked perpetuating the enmeshment. The presentation will discuss how work proceeded, including involving parents, setting limits, and attention to the countertransference.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to 1) Become aware of the complications of working with children and teens and their parents, 2) Learn how to use supervision to effectively manage clinical work, and 3) Become attuned to the transference/countertransference dynamic when dealing with complex family situations.

PRESENTER:  Brian Paquette, LCSW,  MPH, Ed.D. Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Child & Adolescent Program.  He has a certificate in Creative Writing from NYU.

MITPP, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Matriculants see patients at The Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, a licensed OMH facility. Social workers’ clinical hours qualify toward the LCSW.  Candidates may be offered the opportunity to be paid for clinical work if they qualify to see 14 patient hours weekly.  Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,200 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses.  Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
