FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS: Spinoza on Jouissance and Knowledge with André Michels Friday, October 4, 2019 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm  The School of Visual Arts 136 West 21st Street, New York, NY

The great innovation in Spinoza’s Ethics (parts II and III) is his rereading of the mind-body relationship. We will consider that rereading—so relevant to psychoanalysis—especially with regard to the functions of jouissance (gaudium, fruitio) and knowledge (cognitio).

Suggested readings: Spinoza, Baruch de: Ethics (1664-65). Lacan: “La troisième” (1974). Cortés, Juan Vicente: La notion de jouissance chez Spinoza (Paris, Éditions de la Sorbonne, 2019)..

André Michels is a psychoanalyst practicing in Luxembourg and Paris. A member of the Après-Coup faculty, he is co-editor of the Jahrbuch für klinische Psychoanalyse, editor of Actualité de l’hystérie, and author of numerous articles on psychoanalysis.

Fee: $20; for students with ID: $10 Note: Cash or check only.

Attendance is free for annual subscribers to Après-Coup as well as for the faculty and students of the School of Visual Arts.
