This paper addresses multiple aspects of storytelling and narrative in relation to talk therapy.  It is an essayistic exploration of the collaborative meaning-making nature of the therapy conversation.  All theory, all case presentations, all interpretive organizing of experience, are forms of narrative storytelling based in the subjectivity of analyst and patient, mediated by language.  Also of interest are the complex motivations for talking, the need for solitude, and both the need for and fear of human communication.  While the essay is mostly literary and clinical, Ricoeur’s theory of hermeneutics provides theoretical support for these explorations.

Claire Basescu is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Greenwich Village.  She is a Graduate and Supervisor of Psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute and was formerly on the Editorial Board of the Journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis.  She is the author of articles that combine scholarly, clinical, and creative writing on such topics as divorce, parenthood, abortion, solitude, and therapy, particularly the experience of the therapist.  She taught a seminar based on the TV show “In Treatment” and has also published poetry.

2. Describe the power of narrative in psychotherapy.
3. Describe how political and cultural forces influence personal narratives.
