Susan Lawrence, a distinguished Kleinian analyst from London, will present a new, detailed clinical account of her psychoanalysis of an individual suffering from a profound split between what Lawrence calls the “cerebral mind” and the “body mind.” Drawing upon Kleinian and Bionian concepts, including the contemporary contributions of Dr. Ronald Britton, Lawrence will elucidate a remarkable recovery through a rich series of clinical vignettes. These will allow program participants a unique entrée into how Lawrence utilizes containment and interpretation of the transference and countertransference to facilitate previously unimaginable processes of psychosomatic integration in her patient. IPTAR’S Susan Finkelstein will contribute her own nuanced response to this clinical report. Further, there will be ample time for interaction between program participants with Lawrence and Finkelstein. With this event, the IPTAR Program Committee brings to a close its ambitious, multi-year investigation into psychosis, entitled On the Verge: Madness in the Psychoanalytic Encounter.

Susan Lawrence is a psychoanalyst in full-time private practice in London. She is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, and teaches and supervises in the UK and internationally. She recently helped edit two books, Bion 365 by Nicola Abel Hirsch, and Illusion, Disillusion and Irony in Psychoanalysis by John Steiner. She has been the Chair of Outreach for the BPAS, and initiated the BPAS e-learning programme. She is a member of the Melanie Klein Trust.

Susan N Finkelstein, LCSW, is a Training analyst at IPTAR and the Contemporary Freudian Society. She developed Understanding Primitive Mental States, a study group where she teaches: The Internal World and Its Objects, The Claustro-agoraphobic Dilemma, Clinical Klein, The Not-I Patient.  At APsaA she co-chairs a discussion group with Nasir Ilahi on Schizoid Modes in Borderline and Narcissistic Patients. She is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and presents and publishes on claustro-agoraphobia. She is in private practice in NYC in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, couple therapy and clinical supervision.

Learning Objectives:

To understand how splitting mechanisms predominate in patients who exist at the border of psychosis.
To understand how containment and interpretation of transference and countertransference phenomena can effect mutative change in some of these patients.
To understand how these psychoanalytic approaches to case formulation and therapeutic action apply to an individual case.

(3) CE credits will be granted to participants who have registered, have documented evidence of attendance of the entire program and have completed the on-line evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements.
