“The Significance of Gender in Today’s Couple”

Presenter: Graciela Abelin-Sas Rose, MD, is a member of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine and of Center for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (CAPS). She served for several years as the Foreign Editor of The Journal of Clinical Psychoanalysis and as a member of the Committee for Foreign Book Reviews for The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Abelin-Sas Rose founded and chaired the New York Psychoanalytic Institute Colloquium with Visiting Authors, opening a dialogue with different schools of thought. Among her papers: “To Mother or Not to Mother: Abortion and its Challenges;” “The Headless Woman: Scheherazade’s Syndrome;” “Discovering One’s Own Responsibility in a Judgmental System;” “The Internal Interlocutor;” “Malignant Passionate Attachments;” “Coupledom;” “The Perilous Road to Hope.” She co-edited (with Leticia Glocer Fiorini) Freud’s Femininity, a book edited in 2010 by the IPA under the Contemporary Freud Series. Dr. Abelin-Sas Rose is in private practice and conducts private seminars and supervisions.

Presenter: Peter Mezan PhD, is a psychoanalyst in private practice, treating individuals and couples. Before he became an analyst, he was living and working in London as a free-lance journalist, as an editor at Nature, the British science journal, and teaching Renaissance English literature and modern American poetry at Christ’s College, Cambridge. It was during that time that he met R. D. Laing. He introduced Laing to the American public in a cover article in Esquire magazine and over the years became a close friend and observer of Laing and the remarkable circle of people around him. Dr. Mezan is Assistant Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was educated at Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Graduate School, Christ’s College, Cambridge University, and The City University of New York, where he got his PhD in Clinical Psychology. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mezan was Senior Psychologist and Psychotherapy Supervisor at North Central Bronx Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In collaboration with Dr. Abelin-Sas Rose, he has given numerous papers at psychoanalytic conferences around the world on the psychoanalytic treatment of couples.

Since 2005 Drs. Abelin-Sas Rose and Mezan have worked in close collaboration studying couple relationships. Together, they have written numerous papers that have been presented at national and international psychoanalytic conferences on the psychoanalysis of couples.

Margarita Cereijido, PhD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Faculty Member of The Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis (WBCP). She has written and taught on the areas of gender, culture, and prejudice. Dr. Cereijido’s most recent article is: Madres Solteras por Elección y sus hijos; el Devenir de su Subjetividad, [Single Mothers by Choice and their Children; the Becoming of their Subjectivity] (2018). Her forthcoming edited book “Changing Notions of the Feminine: Confronting Analysts’ Prejudices” will be published by Karnac/Roudlege this December. She organizes the Culture and Psychoanalysis annual conference at WBCP. Dr. Cereijido is a member of the Committee of Women and Psychoanalysis (COWAP) at the International Psychoanalytic Association. She is in private practice in Washington, DC.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop participants will be to:
• identify significant changes between gender identity stereotypes thirty years ago and today.
• identify significant changes between couples dynamics thirty years ago and today.
