MITPP OPEN HOUSE & CLINICAL PRESENTATION: FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING Tuesday, June 25, 2019
4:00 PM – 5:30 PM THE TREATMENT OF A YOUNG WOMAN: TRAUMA AND ANXIETY EXACERBATED BY CULTURAL COMPONENTS
A young Chinese woman presented with anxiety and depression exacerbated by her birth in China during the period of One Child Rule and infanticide. The influence of trauma and cultural devaluation since birth affected her ability to communicate verbally, which led to stuttering. The presenter will discuss how the patient manages her anxiety through a manoeuvre of self-protection. By creating an environment that gives her the feeling of being up against a wall, she lives in a safe space despite the limitations it incurs. The patient’s artistic accomplishments are experienced through a sense of emptiness and loss. Her rage and childhood trauma are expressed in a lack of behavioral boundaries also demonstrated by her need to escape by daydreaming which began early in life.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1) Become more aware of the impact of culture on psychopathology.
2) Become more aware of the consequences of trauma.
