AN ONLINE WORKSHOP THE UNCONSCIOUS IS NOT IN ISOLATION: PSYCHIC LIFE DURING A PANDEMIC SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2020 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM PRESENTER: BARBARA STIMMEL, PH.D.
There is an argument to be made that as extraordinary as this time is, in a sense it is no different than any other context in our work. When the world outside dramatically intrudes on the world inside there are profound possibilities in our consulting rooms. All of us filter/exploit/transform our public and private environments uniquely. Psychoanalytic therapy still does the work of searching for meaning that is not obvious, as well as links between past and present; in other words, unconscious links. A pandemic produces unique challenges, but we can meet them.
Learning objectives:
Participants will:
1) become more familiar with basic psychoanalytic concepts, particularly the unconscious, 2) have the opportunity to look at their own clinical work organized around understanding and interpreting the unconscious, and 3) think through particular issues inherent in working in the unusual context of a pandemic.

MITPP, originally established in 1962 to train MCMH clinicians and chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,200 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis and, upon matriculation, are applied toward a certificate. Candidates begin seeing patients as soon as they are processed.
