Psychoanalytic Brooklyn Invites you to a Two-Session Program on HIGH CONFLICT DIVORCE with Steven Demby, PhD Wednesday, January 29, 2020 and Wednesday, February 12, 2020 7:00-8:30 pm
Session I: The nuts and bolts of divorce: what therapists need to know1. Overview of the legal routes to divorce and custody arrangements for children in New York State
2. Explanation of roles: Attorney for the Child, Guardian Ad Litem, forensic evaluator, parenting coordinator
3. Differences between therapeutic and forensic roles
4. Contested custody: when therapists are asked to give information or offer opinions to attorneys for the child, custody evaluators, or parenting coordinators
5.Clinical and ethical dilemmas encountered by clinicians working with this population
6. Best practices and risk management when treating parents or children involved in high conflict separation or divorce.
Session II: The psychological dimensions of high conflict divorce
1. What psychological factors contribute to high conflict divorce?
2. What intrapsychic and inter-personal dynamics make the conflict resistant to change?
3. What is the impact of chronic inter-parent conflict on the children?
4. What are resist and refuse dynamics (parental alienation)?
5. Treating parents and children in the midst of high conflict divorce.
6. A composite case example of an oedipal-age boy caught in the middle of a high conflict divorce
Steven Demby, PhD is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and forensic psychologist in private practice with offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In addition, he conducts and supervises forensic custody evaluations and parenting coordination. Dr. Demby is a Board Member Emeritus of the NY Chapter of the Association for Family and Conciliation Courts. He is on the Executive Committee of the Interdisciplinary Forum on Family Law and Mental Health. He is on the faculty of the Contemporary Freudian Society. Dr. Demby has published articles on entrenched hatred in high conflict divorce, forensic custody evaluations, and parenting coordination.

Who Should Attend: The instructional level for this activity is advanced. Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors) and those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.
Continuing Education Credits:
Registrants must attend both dates in their entirety in order to receive CEs. No partial credit will be given.
Social Workers: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 3 CE credits.
