Wednesday June 24, 2020  11:30AM – 1:15PM THE IPTAR ASYLUM SEEKERS PROGRAM Dyadic, Small and Large Group Experiences of Therapists Working Within and at the Boundaries of the Consulting Room with Asylum Seekers.Richard Lasky, PhD:   Supervisor  Brett Gorkin, PhD:      Administrative Coordinator Psychotherapists: Alexandra Cyr, LP; Anna Fishzon, Judith Hanlon, PhD;  Mary Tirolo, Leni Winn, LCSW

The group will present the history of its formation, a collaboration between Doctors of the World (since re-named HealthRight International) and IPTAR (more specifically The IPTAR Clinical Center), intended to provide pro bono dynamically oriented therapy to victims of political, religious, sexual and genocidal violence and persecution seeking asylum in the United States. The critical containing function of the small supervisory group for the therapists will be described.  Several case histories will be presented followed by a dialogue among the therapist group. The inherent difficulties in the work, such as vicarious traumatization and the clinical challenges of balancing concrete needs and creating a flexible frame will be considered, and common themes will be noted from among these and other cases. Some of the “tensions” in managing the various boundaries in the interface with the legal, social service and the clinical needs of the clients will be described as well as the enrichment gained in learning through these experiences with the Asylum Seekers. The presentation will close with a description of the dissolution of the supervisory group (with some suggestions about what brought it about) and an open discussion with the attendees of this Case Conference.
