AN ONLINE WORKSHOP: BEING A PSYCHOANALYTIC CANDIDATE IN COVID-19 TIMES SATURDAY, MAY 16, 2020 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM PRESENTER: MARIA LAGUNA, LCSW
The journey of becoming a psychoanalytic psychotherapist presents candidates with rewarding moments as well as emotional and intellectual challenges. There are certain anxieties that seem to be inherent in the process of becoming an analyst: the great deal of exposure involved in presenting our clinical work, the mobilizing process of undergoing our own analysis/psychotherapy, the navigation of complex interpersonal dynamics with our patients, our supervisors, teachers and peers. As we all attempt to grapple with the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, new challenges and anxieties emerge: We found ourselves overnight transitioning from the private office or clinic setting to our homes, charged with the difficult task of providing a holding environment in which the shared physical space is lost, and in which both patient and therapist are subjected to uncertainties and deep transformations of their internal worlds.
This interactive workshop will attempt to explore some of the questions that are relevant to all clinicians but even more pressing to candidates in training:
- How can we sustain a “good enough holding environment” in the midst of this global crisis?
- What are the emotional implications (for both patient and clinician in training) of transitioning to Teletherapy?
- How can we sustain an analytical situation in cases where there are new, unexpected “guests” in the analytic encounter, i.e. ambulance sirens blaring in the background, coughs, intrusions or presence of family/roommates/pets, and new crises (unemployment, financial insecurity, health concerns, etc.)?
- How can we remain engaged in the psychoanalytic community during social-isolation?
Some brief clinical vignettes will be presented.
Learning objectives
Participants will:
1) Identify examples of transference and countertransference anxieties that are mobilized in this time of collective trauma, 2) explore the implications of re-negotiating the psychoanalytic frame in the context of the current crisis, and 3) be presented with bibliography and institutional resources that will facilitate engagement in the analytic community and hopefully inspire production of new knowledge.

MITPP, originally established in 1962 to train MCMH clinicians and chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,200 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis and, upon matriculation, are applied toward a certificate. Candidates begin seeing patients as soon as they are processed.
