AN ONLINE WORKSHOP  PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD:  TREATMENT DURING THE PANDEMIC
FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2020  9:00 AM – 11:00 AM PRESENTER: ALEXANDRA CATTARUZZA, MS, LP, FIPA

Pregnancy and the transition to motherhood is a complex time in a woman’s life as she has to struggle with many changes and challenges, including biological, psychological, social, and environmental demands. These demands imply adjustments in many areas of life which may be compromised when early adverse experiences or significant environmental factors are in play.

The importance of treatment during pregnancy is its prophylactic effect. A psychoanalytic treatment approach should include technical modifications aimed at identifying risk factors to lessen their impact on the baby and the mother-infant relationship. Adding to this trying time a worldwide pandemic can exacerbate anxieties and fears, making implications of social distancing, fear of illness and other aspects of the environment necessary considerations for treatment.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

1) Be able to identify the main psychological aspects of pregnancy, normal and psychopathological.

2) Learn about different psychoanalytic interventions during this time, including identifying risk factor for postpartum psychopathology.

3) Learn about the impact of the current pandemic on pregnant mothers and incorporating this reality to the treatment.
