The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, The Metropolitan Center for Mental Health and The Metropolitan Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists Invite you to a Scientific Meeting

Sunday, January 9, 2022 – 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM FREUD, FANON, AND THE LANGUAGE OF POWER: IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND TECHNIQUE
PRESENTER: DANIEL JOSÉ GAZTAMBIDE, PSY.D.
The history of psychoanalytic technique has evolved from the intrapsychic focus on the individual, to the interpersonal focus on the person in the context of their relationships, to the further contextualizing of these in politics, culture, and identity. Despite these advances, it is notable that while technique has evolved to include both an intrapsychic and intersubjective focus (with different inflections across, for example, Contemporary Freudian, relational, and Lacanian perspectives), theoretical developments with respect to the social have not yet been integrated into clear, practical technical innovations, aside from a general call to "consider" or "reflect on" issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the analytic relationship.  This presentation will "return to Freud" and reposition some of the fundamentals of the psychoanalytic theory of the  unconscious, language, and subjectivity, re-read through the work of Martiniquan revolutionary psychiatrist Frantz Fanon. It will be shown that psychoanalysis' attention to the language of love (e.g. attachment object-relations, desire, self-objects, etc), though important, is limited in scope. By attending to the language of power and status in both the analyst and analysand's speech, treatment can create space for organic dialogues about psyche in the context of the social that emerge naturally in clinical work. Using theory, research, and clinical examples, it will be shown how this integrated perspective helps us rethink clinical technique in ways that address the intrapsychic, intersubjective, and socio-cultural simultaneously.

Learning Objectives
Participants will: 1) Distinguish between the words, symbols, and metaphors that signal attachment themes in their patient’s speech, from those that reflect issues of identity, power, and status, 2) Learn to reflect back words, phrases, and symbols of power and status in their patient’s speech, and broach conversations about identity, power, and status organically, and 3) Distinguish between interventions for defense, transference, and enactment work at the level of attachment versus the level of power and status, and adapt these techniques to address issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality.
