PSYCHOANALYTIC BROOKLYN: IMPASSE REDUX with Ann Rudovsky, LCSW & Jules Owen, SJD, LP Friday, May 14, 2021 1:30-3:00pm Online via Zoom
An impasse is a blind alley, a predicament from which there is no obvious escape. When not worked through, impasses can lead to prolonged stalemates, often with the patient leaving prematurely or being unable to move towards a meaningful termination. The potential for an impasse to emerge is overdetermined: it can both express and conceal a variety of feelings that may be unbearable for the patient to tolerate and for the analyst to work through. Just as both patient and analyst play a role in creating and then perpetuating the impasse, each also feels thwarted, blaming the other for not seeing their point of view.
In the material to be presented, the patient sets out to undermine the treatment’s viability from the start: she is often late, often misses sessions, often refuses to enter in and reflect, and plays out a sexual connection to her father as undisguised sexual feelings towards the analyst. The danger is that, to keep the peace, and allow the treatment to continue, both patient and analyst may enter a tacit agreement to avoid examining the most difficult aspects of the impasse, in particular, the sexual acting out that has its own dynamics as well as being part of the patient’s attack on the treatment itself.
In this seminar we hope to look more deeply into the precipitants and dynamics of impasses, as well as ways of working them through.

At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
1) Identify characteristics of impasse.
2) Identify transference – countertransference dimensions of impasses.
3) Describe how the dynamics of the impasse may be made the subject of engagement in the treatment itself.
Who Should Attend: The instructional level for this activity is advanced. Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors) and those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.

DC, MD and VA Psychologists: The CFS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
DC, MD and VA Social Workers: The Social Work Boards of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia will grant continuing education credits to social workers attending a program offered by an APA authorized sponsor.
CE credits will only be granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credit will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 1.5 CE credits.
