Psychoanalytic Brooklyn Invites you to an INTRODUCTION TO THE WORK OF JEAN LAPLANCHE with Rogelio Sosnik, MD  Friday, January 10, 2020
1:30am-3:00pm
Jean Laplanche was one of the most important writers within the French School of Psychoanalysis, known widely as the co-author with Pontalis of The Language of Psychoanalysis.  His theoretical contributions were based on “the return to Freud”, introduced in France by Jacques Lacan. Laplanche provides entry into the “French Freud”, a reading that temporarily suspends the question of clinical experience in favor of a consideration of Freud’s theory. This translation and re-reading of Freud’s opus became an essential reference for the clarification of psychoanalytic concepts.

Translation always means transformations, and in Laplanche’s work, translation-transformation was his way to read Freud. By noticing the conceptual contradictions in Freud’s language, particularly in Freud’s meta-psychological theory, Laplanche attempted to address the unclarity with more precise distinctions. In Life and Death in Psychoanalysis, Laplanche established that the theory of repression, the heart of Freud’s discovery, was itself constantly and necessarily threatened with being repressed. In his work as a translator, he recreated the basic concepts of psychoanalysis which then became the center of his own theoretical constructs. These were articulated in New Foundations for Psychoanalysis. In that text he presented the “General Theory of Seduction”, which guided his work for the rest of his life. Through it he rescued Freud’s theory of seduction, a theory Freud abandoned when he turned to the theory of trauma at the genesis of symptom formation. That gave priority to the biological importance of the development of the individual over the intersubjective relation to the other. For Laplanche, the “seduction” consists of the unconscious (repressed) messages that the adult (mother) directs to the baby, messages implicit in her ministrations. He described this situation as the “fundamental anthropological situation”, which defines the way sexuality and repression are created in the link between mother and baby.

During our meeting I will clarify these concepts, particularly the way in which they provide a new understanding of the psychoanalytic situation and the place of the analyst in it, with a focus on the transference as Laplanche understands it.
