Dear All,

Whether the immense damage is a result of climate change, poor planning of infrastructure on the part of the Pakistani government , unusually high monsoon rains, water diversion to the areas where the poor and underprivileged Pakistanis live ( to save neighboring countries or the assets of the privileged landlords in Pakistan), the bottom line is : one human being in severe distress is no different than another human being in severe distress …whatever the color of their skin, their eyes, their hair ; or their level of education or socio- economic status . Who could we hope would understand this better than a group of psychoanalysts ?

APsaA has a number of analysts of Pakistani origin ( including me) who have devoted decades to helping, pro bono, the cause of psychoanalysis locally, nationally, and internationally; as well as helping fulfill, again pro bono , the mission of APsaA and analytic institutes locally.

It would have felt deeply meaningful to many of APSaA’s Pakistani-American members,  to see on this listserv even a message or two, referring empathically to this tragic calamity which has been well highlighted in American newspapers and on  American television. And it’s now important for all of us to think about this grave omission .

In the meantime , I am deeply grateful to the few  friends and colleagues who did reach out to me individually during this very tough time and asked for ways they could help people in Pakistan who have been displaced , injured , lost family members , lost homes, and lost entire fields of crops which were their livelihood .

Many of my family members in Pakistan are setting up medical camps in flood stricken areas, going in with much needed medical supplies and treating people. These are simply personal efforts being made by many in Pakistan, who have the capacity to help in some shape or form .

If any on this listserv would like to help , the best organization I can suggest is The Hassan Foundation. It was founded by two physicians in Michigan , Drs. Shahida and Mukhtar Khan, after they lost their son Hassan several years ago . The organization is a good and honest one . Shahida and Mukhtar are currently on the ground in Pakistan, providing aid in various areas .

As someone said : “…the most important
commonality is the fact that we all bleed red. We are humankind. These are the bonds that unite us…bond us…make us better beings.”

I know that all of us are always striving to be better human beings. This might be another  opportunity in what is a lifelong effort for most of us.

With gratitude for your consideration…

As ever,
Aisha
