Overview:
Everything I have written can be understood as an effort to find a sufficiently passionate form of treatment. In one of the papers in my collection, Psychoanalytic Reflections: Training and Practice (2017, IP Books) I explore how profound feelings about life and health can be integrated into an analytic approach that also honors the concept of neutrality. In this talk I consider how the clinician can inspire active hope, engage in treatment emotionally, facilitate fighting depression, and other challenges.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to describe ways the clinician can integrate neutrality with a sufficiently emotionally engaged treatment approach.
Participants will be able to define some of the challenges in the treatment of depression, and some ways of inspiring hope.
Participants will be able to discuss some of the conflicts in clinicians between our conceptions of the requirements of neutrality and our desires to reach and help to our patients.
Presenter: Sandra Buechler, Ph.D. is a graduate of the William Alanson White Institute, where she is now on the faculty, and a Training and Supervising Analyst. She is also a supervisor at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital’s internship and postdoctoral programs, and a faculty member and supervisor at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. Dr. Buechler has lectured in Norway, Italy, Scotland, Mexico, Chile, Japan, and at institutes in the USA. In 2009 she guest edited an issue of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, on the subject of analytic training, including papers on training in other cultures. Her first book, Clinical Values: Emotions that Guide Psychoanalytic Treatment, (Analytic Press, 2004) has been translated into Japanese, German, Italian, and Spanish. Her second book, Making a Difference in Patients’ Lives: Emotional Experience in the Therapeutic Setting, won the Gradiva Award, and has been translated into Spanish. Still Practicing: The Heartaches and Joys of a Clinical Career, (Routledge, 2012) examines shame, sorrow, and resilience during training and at subsequent stages of a clinical career. Understanding and Treating Patients in Clinical Psychoanalysis: Lessons from Literature (2015) uses short stories to illustrate defensive patterns. Her latest book, Psychoanalytic Reflections: Training and Practice (IP Books, 2017) explores how values, such as hope and courage, and emotions such as loneliness and sorrow, affect treatment and training relationships.

In Person: The American Institute for Psychoanalysis (AIP) is located at 329 East 62nd Street (between First and Second Avenues) in The Karen Horney Clinic. All classes, workshops and presentations will be conducted in the auditorium on the first floor of the building. Early registration is encouraged, as space in many classes is limited. In some instances, a student may register immediately before the class; please call the office prior to the first class to confirm schedule and course availability.

Cancellation of Courses

AIP reserves the right to cancel courses. If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, tuition will be refunded by mail. If a course is cancelled, your money will be refunded automatically; no withdrawal form is needed.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy

To withdraw from a course please mail, fax, or email your request to the Continuing Education department at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. Refunds cannot be issued unless you have notified the department in writing 24 hours before the start of the class. If for any reason a student chooses to withdraw after a program’s commencement no refunds of tuition or program fee will be given. In addition, any student who withdraws before completion of the program will not receive academic credit from the program.

Rules and Regulations for Registration

Students will be charged a $12.00 penalty fee for bounced checks.
Students whose checks have been declined have seven (7) business days upon receipt of notice to pay their accounts or they will be withdrawn from their class(es).
Students will be charged $15.00 for replacement CE certificates.
