“Exploring The Landscape Of the Mind: Mapping Latent Content”
Janet Lee Bachant, Ph.D.

This meeting is based on Dr. Bachant’s recently published book, Exploring the Landscape of the Mind: An Introduction to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. It will introduce attendees to seven types of listening: content, feeling, defense, transference/countertransference, meaning, enactment, and organization that enable therapists to see more clearly how their patient’s minds are organized.  We will focus on feeling and enactment, aspects of listening that are crucial in accessing unconscious processes. Clinical examples will illustrate these modes of listening.

This Swedish film, the gift of filmmaker Jan Troell, is based on memories from his wife’s childhood, beginning at the onset of WWI.  It’s an exquisitely detailed and emotionally enveloping telling of the life of one woman and her children, living with and surviving an abusive marriage and harrowing times.  Ultimately, it is a study of the different kinds of stress, different kinds of love, and the flashes of light that can successfully fend off darkness.  It received the Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film, 2009.
Admission with CE: $20
