Dear Colleagues,

in the northeast we have gone from the cold weather into summer – not good for the mind or body- and staying in the air-conditioned room reading the posts on our international psychoanalytic website spare me and hopefully will spare you from worrying about heat in the atmosphere, in Korea, in the White House and anywhere else globally where things may be heating up.
I will give you my favorites followed by the entire list.

V.  Screening & Discussion of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation with Helen K. Gediman at NYPSI

Brill Library Film Series: Screening & Discussion of The Conversation with Helen K. Gediman, Ph.D.

Screening & Discussion of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation Helen K. Gediman, PhD
Wednesday, May 23, 2018 7:30 – 10:00 pm The Marianne and Nicholas Young Auditorium 247 East 82nd Street, NYC

Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 masterpiece, The Conversation, is the brilliant forerunner of films in the surveillance stalking genre in which professionals are paid to stalk. The incomparable Gene Hackman portrays a schizoid private investigator whose personality deteriorates under work-related personal guilt that breaks through his characteristic dissociative defenses. The surveillance technology of the Watergate era that sustain his fragile persona is uncannily prescient of present-day omnipresent hacking in Cyberspace. For chills and thrills in great cinema, come one and all.

General Admission – $15
Student Admission – $10

Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 8 pm New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute 247 East 82nd Street, NYC (btwn 2nd and 3rd Aves)
This panel will address a distinctly Latin-American perspective in psychoanalysis. Latin-American contributions to psychoanalysis have been of increasing interest in the age of psychoanalytic pluralism and, over time, they have come to be grouped together. Yet there is limited opportunity to study this collective contribution, especially where European, British, and North American psychoanalytic traditions prevail. To a greater extent than in other regions, psychoanalysis in Latin America has been characterized by an enthusiasm for object-relations theory, based largely on Melanie Klein’s depressive …..

XVI.  New from IPBooks: Building Bridges: Selected Psychoanalytic Papers of Helen K. Gediman

In a time of increasing Balkanization and narrowing of psychoanalysis, Helen Gediman’s work offers a richly textured, integrative perspective. This volume covers a multitude of topics, demonstrating Dr. Gediman’s broad and deep experience. Most striking is how her unflagging theoretical curiosity and thoughtful simultaneous engagement with her patients comes across. Since the papers in this book span 50 years, we can also share in her responses to changes and evolution in the field. It is a treat to revisit relatively understudied areas Dr. Gediman has brought into their rightful prominence in our understanding, such as lying and imposture, and the role of multiple relationships in training. Both dipping in and studying this whole book will richly reward the reader.

IXX.  New from IPBooks: Emma and her selves: a memoir of treatment and a therapist’s self discovery by May Benatar

Emma and her selves is the story of a long term psychotherapeutic relationship between a woman with multiple identities, someone diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Dr. May Benatar shares some of her own process as a therapist discovering the ubiquity of trauma in both the general population and in clinical populations. As she begins to treat victims of childhood sexual abuse she comes to understand that dissociation and the creation of sequestered part selves are the common consequence of trauma.

Along the way she meets Emma and her many selves and is changed ocer the 20 years of their work together. She learns that “parts” exist in all of us, we all have many faces, many states of mind that are called forth in different circumstance. The difference between Emma and more ordinary folks is the degree of access we have to these states and our ability to integrate them within a whole personality.  Dr. Benatar becomes more familiar with her own parts in the process of treating Emma.

There are obstacles and triumphs, mystery and spiritual encounter threaded throughout the narrative.

XXXVIII. “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri” and One Emotional Ride

by Herbert H. Stein

We see a man and woman driving along a quiet country road. She, the older of the two,
is driving and she starts the conversation.
“Hey, Dixon?”
“Yeah?”
“I need to tell you something.”
There is a pause, then she continues.
“It was me who burned down the police station.”
“Well, who the hell else would it have been?”
They drive some more and she speaks again.
“Dixon?”
“Yep?”
“You sure about this?”
“About killing this guy?”
He waits a few moments and continues,
“Not really. You?”
“Not really.”
They drive some more and she says, “I guess we can decide along the way.”
He nods, she smiles, they keep driving …

And then the screen goes black and we see the closing credits.

In that moment in which I realized I was no longer living vicariously in the world of the
film, as I came back to my own world, sitting in a now dark movie theater, I had the thought that I had seen a very unusual film, perhaps unique.

L.  Screening & Discussion of Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk to Her with William Fried, PhD at NYPSI

Brill Library Film Series Screening & Discussion of Talk to Her with William Fried, PhD
Screening & Discussion of Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk to Her William Fried, PhD
Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 7:00 – 10:00 pm, The Marianne and Nicholas Young Auditorium, 247 East 82nd Street, NYC

From Pedro Almodóvar, the director of the Academy-Award(r) winning All About My Mother (Best Foreign Language Film, 2000), TALK TO HER is the surprising, altogether original and quietly moving story of the spoken and unspoken bonds that unite the lives and loves of two couples. Two men (Benigno and Marco) almost meet while watching a dance performance, but their lives are irrevocably entwined by fate. They meet later at a private clinic where Benigno is the caregiver for Alicia, a beautiful dance student who lies in a coma. Marco is there to visit his girlfriend, Lydia, a famous matador, also rendered motionless. As the men keep vigil over the women they love, the story unfolds in flashback and flashforward as the lives of the four are further entwined and their relationships move toward a surprising conclusion.

In his discussion, Dr. Fried will explore Talk to Her as representing the convolutions of desire by focusing on relations in which one of the two partners is comatose. This situation enables the mechanisms of projection and introjection to become the sole relational vehicles
